Planning summary
Use the geometry to shortlist the right projector and lens.
Throw ratio is only one part of projector selection. Brightness, lens shift, resolution, mounting restrictions, ambient light and content should also be checked.

Projection notes
What the throw ratio tells you.
What is projector throw ratio?
Throw ratio is the projector-to-screen distance divided by image width. A 1.5:1 lens needs roughly 1.5 metres of throw distance for each metre of image width.
Does this include lens shift?
No. Lens shift and projector offset affect where the projector can be mounted vertically or horizontally, but they do not change the basic throw-ratio calculation.
Can I choose a projector from throw distance alone?
No. Brightness, contrast, resolution, ambient light, screen material, content and installation conditions should be considered as well.
